Shell Searching In Myrtle Beach

Shell Hunting In Myrtle Beach

Landmark Resort will leave you with beautiful vacation memories along with your pictures and of course, sea shells!  These exotic, yet easy to find pieces of memorabilia can be found up and down the shore.  For the best shells, be sure to explore further to these places mentioned below.  Also, for the best sea shell finding results, begin your search in the morning before beach patrol vehicles and people have a chance to crush them.

When to Shell:

  • When on the hunt for the best shells and maybe even sharks’ teeth, a full moon or new moon is what to look for first. The extreme tides aid in washing up shells.

  • Pay attention to tide charts to see when high and low tide will occur. It’s best to look for shells right before low tide or right after low tide. You are less likely to find shells during high tide since most of the beach is covered.

Where to Shell:

Right Outside the Room

If you are looking for some healthy entertainment for the kids, why not search right outside of Landmark Resort? Enjoy easy beach access when you stay at Landmark Resort. If you begin early, when the tide begins leaving shells on the beach, and preferably after a storm, you have the best chance to find some beautiful intact shells that you can take home and use for decoration.

Myrtle Beach State Park

For a small admission, and just twelve minutes south of Landmark Resort, Myrtle Beach State Park is a wonderful place to search for shells.  Summertime weekends are busy there, but during the week you should be free of a crowd, and have space and peace to relax during your shell hunt. If you brought your fishing poles, then take advantage of their pier which is included in the admission. Admission is $5 for adults; $3.25 for SC seniors (age 65 & older); $3 for children age 6-15; and free for children 5 and younger. For more information, call 843-238-5325.

Pawleys Island

If you are committed in your shell search you will not be disappointed with a drive of about twenty miles south to the beautiful and uncongested, Pawleys Island.  Along with shells, you might find sand dollars, sharks’ teeth, and some lucky families have the pleasure of observing live starfish move across the beach.

Huntington Beach State Park

Besides being one of the most popular places for bird watching, Huntington Beach State Park is a fabulous place for shell finding.  For just a small admission and a fifteen-mile drive from our resort, you may enjoy the preserved nature as you comb the beach for findings.  Admission is $5 for adults; $3.25 for SC seniors (age 65 & older); $3 for child age 6-15; and free for children 5 and younger.

Eagles Beachwear

If you are more interested in attaining shells and less interested in the back-bending work involved, then let the Eagles Beachwear stores help you out. Check out any of their 19 locations around Myrtle Beach.  With your VMB Card enjoy the perk of 10% off anything in the store or a free sand dollar or starfish with any purchase.

Creative Shell Uses:

Jar filled with shells from the beach (craft idea)Shell Frames

All you need is a plain frame, beautiful Myrtle Beach shells and a hot glue gun. Glue shells side by side onto the frame and voila!  Wrapping your picturesque photo memories in a homemade frame makes for the perfect project and souvenir from your vacation in Myrtle Beach.

Paint and Frame Shells

Draw designs and fill in the dots by gluing shells into any shape you can imagine! Make a heart, anchor, initials and more and place them on a canvas, glass jar or wooden boards.  Not only does this make for a family-friendly project but may also come in handy as gifts for the upcoming holiday season.

Glass Jar Shell Display

If you prefer not to get your hands sticky or painted, shells being displayed in glass jars or vases are a timeless conversation piece that may be placed around your home. You can also add sand to the bottom as well if you would like to.

Just as there are no shortage of shells on the beaches, there are not shortage of ideas on where to find the best ones and what to do with them too! The first step to finding shells is to book your oceanfront suite at Landmark. Make your Landmark Resort reservations.
